ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The city government is constructing a PhP200 million pumping station to address the problem of flooding during heavy rains in this city's downtown areas.
Constant flooding is being experienced along Veterans Avenue and Pilar Street areas in Barangay Zone IV during heavy rains even in just few hours.
City Administrator Marie Angelique Go on Monday said the construction of the pumping station is a long-term solution to address the flooding while the short term is the constant cleaning of drainage.
But Go believes the construction of the pumping station must be coupled with zoning and regulatory measures to address the problem.
She said that the illegal settlers will have to be relocated and waste management will also be addressed.
She said the city's business district should also be decentralized “because the drainage capacity has already been maximized.”
She said the construction of the pumping station will be undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways. (PNA)
