CEBU CITY -- The Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7) on Friday ordered the deactivation of all drug enforcement units (DEUs) in the region following President Rodrigo Duterte’s order giving the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) sole control of anti-drug operations in the country.

Senior Superintendent Jonathan Cabal, chief of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID), said he has already sent directives to all city and provincial police offices, ordering them to disband their respective DEUs .

However, Cabal said the dissolution of the DEUs did not mean that the police would no longer engage in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.

As the police have been mandated to gather intelligence, Cabal said they would forward all their accumulated information to the PDEA, including their own drug watch list.
The police is also ready to extend assistance to the PDEA if necessity dictates, especially on hot-pursuit and checkpoint operations.
Cabal warned drug lords and pushers not to be happy about this development as the police would continue its surveillance on all suspected drug personalities and inform the PDEA of their illegal activities.

The RID chief said they believe in the President’s wisdom and they are not dismayed by his decision to exclude the police from the war on drugs. (PNA)
