DOST names best small enterprise tech adoptors

LOS BAŇOS, Laguna – Five Best SETUP (Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program) Adoptors and 24 SETUP graduates were named during the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Calabarzon’s 54th Anniversary Celebration held at the DOST science complex in Barangay Timugan here Monday.

DOST-Calabarzon Regional Director Dr. Alexander R. Madrigal, and Assistant Director Dr. Lydia Manguiat led the presentation of the “Best SETUP Adoptor” awardees per province from Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon, who have adopted the science and technology (S&T) innovations of the regional agency.
Plaques of recognition were awarded to Delfa’s Food Products supported by the Provincial S&T Center (PSTC) - Cavite; Gem See’s Cakeshop of PSTC-Laguna; Panaderia Pantoja Inc. of PSTC-Batangas; Jamerika of PSTC-Rizal; and Pasiolco Agriventures of PSTC-Quezon.

The SETUP is a nationwide strategy to encourage micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to upgrade their technologies; and implement innovations at their level, resulting in strengthening the country’s innovation system.

The program is in sync with President Rodrigo Duterte’s 0 + 10 socio-economic agenda “to promote science, technology and the creative arts to enhance innovation and creative capacity towards self-sustaining inclusive development”.
Presidential Adviser for Southern Tagalog Secretary Jose Maria Nicomedes F. Hernandez hailed the DOST milestone event as a celebration of achievements that have made a significant impact on the economic activities and have improved the lives of the Filipino people.
He said that in line with the President’s vision, an essential component of the country’s true transformation involves a long-term initiative of development, sustainable, diversified and advance technology to help improve lives.

“S&T are the essential medium in setting the direction and coordination of all scientific and technological activities, particularly in policy making and program formulation in pursuit of national inclusive development,” Hernandez said as he cited the development of the first DOST Halal Verification Laboratory.

He also commended DOST-Calabarzon for empowering remote and island communities through S&T and the regional agency’s achievements in key areas, such as disaster risk reduction and management on data generation, warning system and response; regional and provincial road setting and microbiological testing, community empowerment through S&T; production and product development; RX Box tele-health device; technology classrooms and laboratories; science tourism; calibration and testing, and digital science library through STARBOOKS.

DOST event organizers also disclosed that the “Best SETUP Adoptors” were chosen per province based on their performance, and were a reflection of the anniversary celebration theme, “Improving Lives and Sustaining Inclusive Regional Growth through Innovative Programs and Services”.

Madrigal also recognized the DOST SETUP co-operators who have graduated under the program after completing their financial obligations and being declared full owners of the equipment provided to them.
