MANILA -- Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista urged city residents to help improve women's conditions, especially those abused and harassed.

"The fight for women’s rights is not only a female fight. We men must be as strong in our support to uplift the living condition of women," Bautista said in his "State of the Women" address Monday.

This National Women's Month, the city mayor also encouraged men to support women, who struggle to uplift the quality of life, and fight not only for women but also for humanity.

"Ultimately, the fight for women’s rights is a fight for humanity – a fight to make sure that all of us are treated as the wonderful gifts of creation that we are all meant to be,” he added.

In 2016, Quezon City became the first local government in the country to partner with UN Women to implement the Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative.

Its council passed an ordinance strengthening the city's Gender Development Code and provided penalties for sexual harassment and sexual violence against women in public spaces. (PNA)
