MANILA -- The country’s first container roll-on-roll-off (RORO) barge terminal in Cavite might open in June this year, based on estimates of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade.
The Cavite Gateway Terminal will facilitate the transport of goods through barges going from the Port of Manila to Cavite.
“It will be a terminal that will be dedicated for containers," Tugade said in a speech at the Asia CEO Forum at the Manila Marriott Hotel in Pasay City on Thursday. "The containers will no longer pass through the highways of Metro Manila but will travel in the waters of Cavite going to Laguna, Batangas, and Subic. This is the first step in moving containers through waters, not on the roads.”
Located in a six-hectare property in Tanza, Cavite, the barge terminal, which will be operated by the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), is expected to reduce truck trips in Metro Manila by 140,000 trips annually.
As a result, road traffic will be reduced by approximately two kilometers of trucks, when the terminal starts operations. (PNA)
