JORDAN, Guimaras -- The construction of the 5.7-kilometer Panay-Guimaras bridge may start next year, Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin said on Wednesday.

Gumarin said that the pre-feasibility being undertaken by some Chinese proponents for the construction of the PHP24 billion inter-island bridge may be completed within the year.

Initially, Gumarin said that the village of Taminla in the town of Buenavista is being considered as the area where the bridge will be constructed, connecting the village in the town of Leganes in Iloilo province.

Recalling his last meeting with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the governor said that the construction of the bridge may be financed by a bank from China. The project may also be given to a Chinese contractor.

The bridge project is among the priority infrastructures under the “Build, Build, Build” Program of the Duterte administration.

Senator Cynthia Villar said that one of the eight proposed inter-island bridges in the country will be constructed before the end of the term of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Quoting his son, Mark Villar, who is the current DPWH Secretary, the senator said the proposed Iloilo-Guimaras-Negros bridge is "feasible" because of the shallow water between these islands. (PNA)
