CEBU CITY -- Mayor Tomas Osmeña is eyeing the immediate start of construction of the PHP5-million Skateboard Park in the city.

Mayor Osmeña said Thursday there’s no reason to delay the construction of the skateboard park as they already have the private funding for the project.

“We are going to start (construction of the) skateboard park with private funds. I want it immediately. No need for supplemental budget for the work. We just need to have people to come in and build it,” Osmeña said.

The project is in response to the appeal of some young skateboard enthusiasts to have a venue for the sport in the city.

The mayor said he received a USD100,000 contribution to start the project from his sister Minnie Osmeña and he wants the skateboard park to be completed before Christmas.

“Okay, game. Let’s go ahead. I will help build something for the young Cebuanos before Christmas,” he said.

Osmeña said he hates to ask budget from the government for a project because of the complicated process, including getting the approval of the City Council which usually takes time.

The site for proposed skateboard park will be at the 30-hectare lot owned by the Cebu city government near the South Road Properties (SRP) entrance in Barangay Mambaling.
The mayor said he will ask technical assistance from champion skateboarders for the layout of the park before talking to some contractors who will undertake the project. (With reports from Bebie Jane Casipong/PNA)
