LEGAZPI CITY -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to give all enthusiasts an opportunity to meet and interact with Science and Technology (S&T)/Research and Development (R&D) officials and experts regarding available technologies, intervention programs, and livelihood and scholarship opportunities next week.

The activity will be held during the 2018 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) regional celebration, with DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña opening the event on August 8, said DOST regional information officer Dr. Pelita Lucena, in an interview on Monday.

Among the activities lined-up for the RSTW celebration are the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) awarding, Ceremonila project turnover, exhibits, displays of DOST-Bicol programs and services, film showing featuring "Inobasyon at Inbensiyon sa Robotiks", orientation on "Balik Scientist program", Food Safety Summit and launching of "ManFabLab".

Lucena said this year’s S&T Week regional celebration will be held from August 8-10 at the Bicol University Gymnasium, East Campus with the theme "Science for the People 2018- Innovation for Collective Prosperity".

"For the last day, August 10, that would be 'Scholar's Day' -- a day of competition between schools or what we call 'Tagisan ng Galing at Talino ng mga Iskolar'," she added.

Lucena recalled that during the National Science and Technology Week celebration attended by DOST-Bicol representatives last July 17-20 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Secretary Dela Peña said in his message that Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) transformed the lives of those in the lower, if not in the lowest strata of society, and gave them better socio-economic conditions with the livelihood opportunities made available to them through S&T interventions and assistance program.

"The event is open to all interested individuals such as S&T enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, students, researchers, inventors, innovators, professionals and the general public," Lucena said. (PNA)
