MANILA -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Monday it is now assisting more than 28,000 families or 182,209 individuals affected by the onslaught of monsoon rains over the weekend.

“Habang nasa evacuation centers sila, nakahanda ang ahensya na tulungan sila, lalo na ang local government units (LGUs) na humihingi ng tulong (for as long as they are in the evacuation centers, the agency is ready to help them, especially the LGUs who are asking for assistance)," DSWD Secretary Virginia Orogo told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Orogo said the evacuation centers are schools and gymnasiums.

She, however, said some schools used as evacuation centers may already have their classes by Tuesday.

Orogo noted that affected by the onslaught of monsoon rains or "habagat" over the weekend are 184 barangays in Metro Manila, 66 barangays in Central Luzon, 34 barangays in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), 33 barangays in Central Luzon, and nine barangays in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Sa Marikina City, nakaabot na kaming 12,000 food packs na ang relief goods, na ibinigay ng ahensya (In Marikina City, the agency has provided 12,000 food packs of relief goods),” Orogo said.

The food packs are consisting of six kilos of rice, corned beef, 3-in-1 coffee, which the DSWD has started distributing since Saturday.

Meron tayong personal kits na ang laman ay toothpaste, toothbrush, sabon, toiletries na ibinibigay sa nabiktima ng bagyo (We have personal kits containing toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, toiletries which are being given to victims of storm),” Orogo said.

Nagbibigay din kami ng sleeping kits na may kulambo para safe sila sa lamok, banig at may malong (We are also providing sleeping kits with mosquito net so that they will be safe from mosquitoes, blanket and malong),” she added. (PNA)
