NOVELETA, Cavite – The local government here, led by Mayor Dino Reyes Chua, commemorated Friday the 122nd anniversary of the Fall of the Noveleta Tribunal with a floral and wreath offering ceremony at the monuments of Cavite hero, Gen. Mariano Alvarez, and local heroes, and the soft opening of the Magdiwang Bridge.
“Binibigyan halaga po namin ang aming mga ninuno sa aming mahal na Bayan ng Noveleta, na nakipaglaban para sa bayan at sa ating lalawigan dito sa Cavite noong panahon ng himagsikan (We are paying tribute to our forebears in our beloved Noveleta, who fought for our town and the province of Cavite during the revolutionary period),” Chua said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
The mayor along with Vice Mayor Donnie Torres, town councilors, government employees and village leaders, led town constituents in offering wreaths at the busts of local heroes and opening the Magdiwang Bridge to motorists and commuters at 8 a.m. The bridge was named after the historic Noveleta event.
According to the Department of the Interior and Local Government 4-A (Calabarzon) website, Noveleta led the first victory of the Philippine revolutionary forces in Cavite with the victory at the Noveleta Tribunal.
The Magdiwang Council of the Katipunan, led by General Mariano Alvarez, took the tribunal after a skirmish that killed two Spanish officers on Aug. 31, 1896. This inspired the Caviteños that until a major counter attack was made by the Spanish General Lacambre, Cavite’s major coastal towns enjoyed the freedom.
Chua led the floral offerings at the busts of Gen. Mariano Alvarez and four other local heroes -- Gen. Alvarez’s son Gen. Santiago Alvarez, cousin Gen. Pascual Alvarez, Gen. Luciano San Miguel, and Gen. Ariston Villanueva at the town plaza.
Vice Mayor Torres, meanwhile, laid a wreath at the Noveleta Tribunal marker at the town poblacion, while Municipal Councilor Davey Reyes Chua and party offered another wreath at the historic “Battle of Calero Bridge” in Barangay San Rafael. Each ceremony was followed by simultaneous commemorative programs.
The tribute to the town’s local heroes was also highlighted by a parade that passed through the Magdiwang Bridge.
The local government also honored the “Makabagong Bayani” (modern-day heroes) of the town in an awards ceremony at the historic Iglesia Filipina Independiente Church after a Holy Mass. (Dennis Abrina/PNA)
