MANILA -- National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) spokesperson Edgar Posadas on Monday said Typhoon Ompong has left eight persons dead as it barrelled through Northern Luzon last Saturday.

In the NDRRMC 6 p.m. update, Posadas broke down the number of fatalities to one each for Regions 1 (Ilocos) and 3 (Central Luzon) and six for the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Posadas did not give specific details on the deaths except that they were already confirmed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

"May I just report to you (that) this is already confirmed by the DILG and I think they are still verifying some more. They might send us the list tonight of the additional casualties," he added.

Aside from the eight confirmed dead, the NDRRMC also confirmed reports of two missing persons.

Posadas also said the number of casualties undergoing validation is still quite large.

"We are just confirming the deaths, 50 plus are still the initial (information) and we still have 40 plus missing," he added.

Around 30 persons were also reported injured, the NDRRMC official said.

Posadas said the number of dead, mostly from CAR, and other details are still being validated as of this posting. (PNA)
