Pangasinan dengue cases up by 87%

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has recorded 6,231 dengue cases from January 1 to September 24 this year, which is 87 percent more than the 3,331 cases during the same period last year.

Based on the surveillance data dated September 24, Urdaneta City reported the highest number of dengue cases with 501, followed by San Carlos City – 382 cases, Pozorrubio – 348, Alaminos City – 322, Mangaldan – 310, Bayambang – 278, Asingan – 276, Binmaley – 260, Mapandan – 226, and San Manuel – 214.

PHO chief, Dr. Anna Teresa De Guzman, said there were 25 deaths from January 1 to September 24 this year, higher than the nine mortalities noted in the same period last year.

“The youngest victim of dengue was a two-month-old baby and the oldest was 86-year-old,” she said in an interview Friday.

Meanwhile, the number of individuals affected by acute gastroenteritis and typhoid cases went down.

PHO’s surveillance data recorded a total of 6,062 acute gastroenteritis cases from January 1 to September 24, down by 21 percent from 7,714 during the same period last year.

De Guzman said the number of deaths due to the disease declined from 36 last year to 29 this year.

The number of typhoid victims also dropped by 29 percent from 339 last year to 240 this year, without any casualty on both years, she added.

Under PHO’s watchlist on typhoid are the towns of Bayambang, San Carlos City, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara and Mangatarem. (PNA)
