MANILA – A total of 13 informants received cash rewards amounting to more than PHP3.176 million from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Wednesday.

The informants, identified only through their codenames Efren, El Guapo, Garfield, Aser, RK, Cobra, Ada, Spade, Chard, Bungo, Abe, Dang and Bantay, provided information that resulted in 19 successful anti-drug operations, confiscation of illegal drugs, and arrest of drug personalities.

The informants received their cash rewards in a ceremony at the PDEA National Headquarters in Quezon City, spearheaded by PDEA Director General Aaron N. Aquino and members of the Private Eye Rewards Committee.

The granting of rewards and incentives is under PDEA “Operation Private Eye”, a citizen-based information collection program designed to encourage the active participation of private citizens to report illegal drug activities in their communities.

The Private Eye Rewards Committee is composed of members from the academe, non-government organizations, law enforcement, religious and business sectors whose members deliberate and approve the granting of cash rewards to confidential informants or CIs. The CIs are identified only by their codenames for security reasons.

“Operation Private Eye is one way of encouraging the public to help the government’s anti-drug campaign by providing cash reward for information that result in the seizure of illegal drugs and arrest of drug personalities,” said Aquino.

In a related development, the agency’s six operating units have also received monetary reward amounting to PHP2,303,653 for their meritorious anti-drug operations.

Aquino personally gave the rewards on Wednesday to PDEA- Intelligence and Investigation Service (PDEA-IIS), PDEA- Regional Office 3, PDEA Regional Office 6, PDEA Special Enforcement Service, PDEA Regional Office National Capital Region, and PDEA Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Among the PDEA operating units, PDEA-IIS received the biggest reward amounting to PHP956,617.16 after the successful conduct of three buy-bust operations on Sept. 24, 2018 along Roxas Boulevard, Manila that resulted in the arrest of a Chinese drug personality and the confiscation of 21,208.63 grams of shabu worth PHP144 million; conduct of a buy-bust operation on Sept. 25, 2018 along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, Parañaque City that resulted in the arrest of two drug personalities and confiscation of 1,895.04 grams of shabu worth PHP12.9 million; and the conduct of a buy-bust operation on Sept. 25, 2018 in Malate, Manila that resulted in the arrest of two drug personalities and confiscation of 936.05 grams of shabu worth PHP6.4 million.

The granting of rewards was based on the creation of “Operation Lawmen” pursuant to Section 22 of RA 9165, which was institutionalized through Dangerous Drugs Board Regulation Number 1, Series of 2016 and took effect on Sept. 3, 2016.

“Operation Lawmen” is the reward or award program for law enforcers or members of the anti-illegal drug units/teams or task forces including the support unit/s,” Aquino pointed out, adding that this reward scheme will boost the morale of different law enforcement operating teams in conducting anti-drug operations.

This is the fourth time this year that PDEA has given monetary reward to its operating units under “Operation Lawmen”. (PNA)
