DAVAO CITY – Davao Oriental Gov. Nelson Dayanghirang on Thursday called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities amid the decision of Congress to extend martial law in Mindanao.

Dayanghirang said he believes the imposition of martial law on the island has contributed to the enhanced security in Mindanao.

“Let us also continue to sow the seeds of peace so we may reap the fruits of peace in the future,” Dayanghirang said in a press statement issued on Thursday.

He added: “Our people feel a lot safer, the business sector feel more confident about their investments, and we in the local government units are ensured that our development projects are continuously implemented without impediments and that our peace and development initiatives and efforts will be sustained."

The governor, who was one of the local executives in Davao Region to call for an extension of martial law in Mindanao, also expressed his confidence that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) can secure sustainable peace in the country.

Last month, Dayanghirang led Davao Oriental's Provincial Peace and Order Council in passing a resolution supporting the martial law extension.

“We don't feel like martial law is being implemented because we are the very first province in Davao region declared as conflict-manageable,” the governor said.

Earlier, Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy lauded the extension of martial law as it will sustain the gains the province has achieved in the past year. (Lilian C Mellejor/PNA)
