ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A soldier was killed while two others were injured when a militiaman ran amuck in the province of Basilan, a top police official said Tuesday.

Chief Supt. Emmanuel Luis Licup, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) director, said the incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. on New Year’s Eve in Barangay Kapatagan Grande, Isabela City, Basilan.

Licup identified the fatality as Cpl. Sali Tagayan of the Army’s 15th Special Forces Company based in Kapatagan Grande detachment.

Wounded were militiamen Alejandro Enriquez and Sahadain Mustamad, both assigned at the detachment.

Licup said the victims were on duty when suddenly the suspect, Faisal Alam, ran amuck and repeatedly shot the victims with an M-16 Armalite rifle.

He said the suspect hurriedly fled and is now the object of a manhunt operation by the Isabela City Police Station.

The three victims were rushed to an infirmary but Tagayan expired while undergoing treatment. The two militiamen were later transferred to a hospital in this city. (PNA)
