MANILA -- All teaching and non-teaching personnel in Quezon City public schools will get a PHP500 increase in their quarterly rice allowance after Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista signed an ordinance increasing their previous PHP1,500 rice allowance to PHP2,000.
“The Quezon City government recognizes the efforts of our school personnel to nurture our students who we consider as the future of our city and our nation. This increase -- along with the other allowance increases we have made possible last year -- is to make sure our teachers are compensated justly,” Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte said in an interview Thursday.
“We also understand that the price of rice has increased in the previous months, which is why we proposed an ordinance for the rice allowance hike. With its approval, I’m sure this will help our teachers and personnel in their daily expenses,” Belmonte added.
Ordinance 2754, authored by Councilor Aly Medalla, also mandated the inclusion of the rice allowance fund to the city’s 2019 budget to begin the distribution of the increased allowance this year.
“For our public-school teachers, we also increased their longevity pay from PHP100 to PHP400 for every five years of service. I think these increases just go to show that one of our highest priorities in Quezon City is really education and, since teachers are front and center in our drive to improve this service in the city, we will continue to implement reforms that benefit them and the students,” Belmonte said.
Just this January, Bautista signed Ordinance 2782 which increases teachers’ longevity pay for every five years of continuous service within public schools in the city.
On Oct. 2, 2018, Ordinance 2751 was also signed to raise the monthly supplemental allowance from PHP1,000 to PHP1,500 for national paid public-school teaching and non-teaching personnel in Quezon City. (PNA)
