MANILA -- The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources' (PCAARRD) assistance to Max's Restaurant in producing quality sweet potato will expand early this year, the Council has said.

"PCAARRD has been a strong support to sweet potato (SP) breeding program and varietal improvement since 1975 until present, wherein we are already on the value chain and industry development. PCAARRD, through the project (S&T-SP Value Chain Development), provided specific varieties for fries and flour, and established nursery of these in Antipolo, Rizal," project leader Julieta Roa told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Friday.

Roa said Max's has approached PCAARRD in July 2018 for the project that was developed by the Visayas State University (VSU).

"(Prior to that), Max's also has an existing memorandum of understanding with PCAARRD since 2016. This MOU involved extension initiatives to improve production and primary processing practices for selected crop commodities," she added.

According to PCAARRD, the SP project was established in Antipolo, and will expand early this year, with about 60-hectare identified areas in Antipolo and Bulacan.

"SP high yielding varieties, such as SP 17 recommended for french fries, were planted in a nursery in Antipolo. We will also plant PSB (Philippine Seed Board) SP 36 and VSP (Visca Sweetpotato), VSP 6, soon," Roa said.

Max’s also needs SP powder for various culinary uses. VSU recommended the "Super Bureau" variety or VSP 6, which will soon be produced from quality planting materials in Tarlac, PCAARRD added.

"Antipolo has rich agricultural farms based on a previous assessment. There are existing trained cooperators (for SP). Antipolo is also near the commissary of Max's which is in Marikina," Roa remarked.

Meanwhile, Roa clarified that not all the SPs that Max's would serve would come from PCAARRD-assisted nurseries.

"Other farms that would grow these (SP) varieties can be sources of raw materials needed by Max's," she explained.

She also said that even if Max's is not a small business, it did not pay PCAARRD for the technology because this is part of the SP chain development.

"Also, Max's has a Corporate Social Responsibility that aims to help farmer groups in production and processing," she added. (PNA)
