DAVAO CITY – The AboitizPower said it continues to pursue ways to enhance its environmental management and marine protection programs following the discovery of another sea turtle nest at the shoreline of the Therma South, Inc. (TSI) coal plant in Binugao, Toril district.
“AboitizPower is looking for ways to enhance its environmental management and marine protection endeavors, especially through its Cleanergy Park in Punta Dumalag,” the AboitizPower said in a statement on Thursday.
TSI was set to coordinate with experts Punta Dumalag Cleanergy Park run by Davao Light and Power Com, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Ridge to Reef Environmental Consultancy for the protection and monitoring of the turtle nest.
A sea turtle or "pawikan" nest was discovered inside the plant complex of TSI last month. It was the second nesting site discovered at the shoreline; the first one was in December last year.
The sea turtle, an Olive Ridley, was spotted crawling into the coal plant shoreline by the security personnel who found the turtle laying eggs. TSI has built a temporary enclosure to protect the nest.
In January, the Aboitiz Group signed a partnership with the city government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to strengthen protection and conservation of marine life, particularly the endangered hawksbill turtles.
AboitizPower through Davao Light has maintained the Cleanergy Park since it was opened in 2015. The park now serves as a venue to inform and educate more visitors about the importance of safeguarding sea turtles and their natural habitat. (PNA)
