KIDAPAWAN CITY -- The City Tourism Office here has appealed to both local and foreign tourists to explore other destinations in the city and North Cotabato in the face of the impending closure of Mt. Apo to trekkers.

City Tourism Officer Joey Recimilla admitted that the approaching closure of Mt. Apo for the summer climb has affected the industry, including the tourist guides.

Recimilla said tourism officers of Kidapawan, Digos City, and the towns of Bansalan and Kapatagan in Davao del Sur and the Mt. Apo Protected Area Management Board have decided to shut the trail starting next month to prevent forest fires while the island is experiencing a dry spell brought about by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The Kidapawan trail has been closed since March 11.

“Aside from the peak, tourists can also visit and explore the Lake Agco, a resort beside the country’s highest peak and the Paniki Falls in Barangay Balabag here,” Recimilla said.

Furthermore, he said there are other tourist destinations in North Cotabato that tourists can visit, such as the longest zip line and the Asik-Asik Falls in the towns of Makilala and Alamada, respectively. (PNA)
