Number of dengue cases in Central Visayas now almost 5K

CEBU CITY – Dengue cases in Central Visayas have significantly increased in just a month's time.

Data from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) showed that there were 3,076 dengue cases from January 1 to Feb. 9 and 4,955 cases as of March 9, indicating an increase of 1,879 since last month.

The number of deaths due to dengue also increased from 24 (Jan. 1-Feb. 9) to 32 (Jan.-March 9).

Top officials and some department heads of the DOH Central Visayas Center for Health Development, including RESU chief Dr. Shelbay Blanco, were not available for an interview as they were reportedly discussing the current dengue situation in the region in a closed-door meeting Friday.

Meanwhile, the 4,955 cases and 32 deaths recorded by the different reporting units from January to March 9 this year in the region is 234 percent higher compared to the 1,484 cases and 10 fatalities in the same period of last year.

Cebu City remains on top of the list with the most number of cases at 524. The number of deaths in Cebu City also increased from two in 2018 to five this year.

Next on the list is Lapu-Lapu City with 426 cases and one death, followed by Mandaue City with 256 cases and two fatalities, Dumaguete City with 200 and one death, and Danao City with 138 cases.

Rounding up the top 10 with the most number of dengue cases are Sibulan town in Negros Oriental with 115 cases, Minglanilla (Cebu) with 103, Toledo City with 100 and two deaths, Consolacion (Cebu) also with 100, and Cordoba, Cebu with 93 cases and one fatality. (PNA)
