MANILA -- Mayor Abby Binay on Sunday congratulated five more Makati City barangays that have been cleared of illegal drugs by the Regional Oversight Committee on Barangay Drug-Clearing Program.

In a statement, Binay said the Regional Oversight Committee on Barangay Drug-Clearing Program gave Barangays Bel-Air, Dasmariñas, Sta. Cruz, Pinagkaisahan and Post Proper Southside “a drug-cleared status” on February 27.

“We honor the anti-drugs taskforce for your exemplary efforts to eradicate illegal drugs and its accompanying unlawful acts in the city. Let us continue to work hand-in-hand to put an end to the illegal trade and save the future of our young Makatizens,” Binay said.

Aside from barangay captains, Binay also lauded the Makati Anti-Drug Abuse Council (MADAC), Philippine National Police-Makati, Department of the Interior Local Government-Makati and the city anti-drugs taskforce.

Recently, barangays Forbes Park and Magallanes have been declared ‘drug-cleared’ while barangays Urdaneta and San Lorenzo have achieved a ‘drug-free’ status.

A drug-cleared barangay will receive a ‘drug-free’ certification if it will consistently record zero illegal drug incidents.

The certification is based on non-availability of drug supply; absence of drug transit/transhipment activity, clandestine drug laboratory and chemical warehouse, marijuana cultivation site; drug den, pushers, users, dependents, protectors, coddlers and financiers.

Other criteria included active involvement of barangay officials in anti-illegal drugs activities; active involvement of Sangguniang Kabataan representatives in maintaining the drug-liberated status of the barangay; and the existence of drug awareness, preventive education and information, and other related anti-illegal drug programs and the existence of a voluntary and compulsory drug treatment and rehabilitation processing desk in the barangay.

From May 10 to Nov. 23 last year, the Makati police conducted 333 anti-illegal drugs operations, resulting in the arrest of 588 illegal drugs personalities and seizing of a total of PHP769,021 worth illegal drugs while 25,793 individuals underwent random drug testing. (PNA)
