DUMAGUETE CITY -- A member of the Civilian Armed Auxiliary (CAA) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was shot dead on Sunday by suspected Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) hitmen in Guihulngan City in northern Negros Oriental.

A police report from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) on Monday identified the victim as Cerilo Desumparan Malig-on, 44, a resident of Sitio Batongboang in Barangay Trinidad.

He was an active CAA member detailed with the Army’s 13th Infantry Battalion detachment in Sitio Candalanon in said village.

Police investigation showed that five unidentified suspects wearing jackets and cap and believed to be members of the NPA’s Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) shot the victim inside his residence around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim and his wife Marilyn were busy preparing food for the birthday celebration of their five-year-old son when the five suspects arrived and without provocation, shot the militiaman several times, causing his instantaneous death.

Police investigators have yet to establish the motive for the killing of the CAA member.

The NPA is listed as terrorist organization by both the United States and European Union. (PNA)
