BACOLOD CITY -- The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has extended a PHP4-million grant for scholarships on various courses for cultural artists and workers in Negros Island.
The courses, which will be taught in workshops on specialized areas, will be offered under HANAS: Scholarship Program in Culture and the Arts initiated by the West Visayas Museum Association (WVMA), Inc. and Colegio San Agustin (CSA)-Bacolod through the grant from the NCCA.
Christopher Lucindo, head of the NCCA Accreditation and Grants Processing Section, in a press briefing held at the Negros Museum, said the memorandum of agreement signed on Tuesday afternoon by the agency and the grantees, formalized the project partnership.
The “HANAS”, Hiligaynon term which means “to hone”, aims to improve the skills of performing artists, cultural workers, teachers, and second liners through short courses.
Courses offered include the Fundamentals of Theatre, Fundamentals of Film, Dance, Basic Museology, Weaving, and Creative Curriculum.
Rudy Reveche, executive and workshop pedagogy director of HANAS, said they aim to accept 150 full scholars for the various workshops on the specialized areas and practices offered mainly from April to May.
Classes will be held at the CSA-Bacolod campus and the Negros Museum.
The culmination of workshops and presentation of outputs will be held in May and June.
Reveche said participants who will attend a total of 120 hours of workshops will receive a certificate of completion while those who will just attend short training courses will be given a certificate of attendance.
The CSA-Bacolod, through its Performing Arts Scholarship Program, is the only school in Negros Occidental accredited by the Department of Education for its Arts Track with Performing Arts strand and by the Commission on Higher Education for its Bachelor in Culture and Arts Education program.
Meanwhile, WVMA, Inc. aims to unite all museums and museum workers in Western Visayas to promote the conservation and preservation of cultural heritage; develop and capacitate museum workers to bridge the needs regarding practices vital to museum operations; and organize activities that address common concerns in museum issues and bring together museum work.
