MANILA – Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents have arrested an overstaying Japanese national wanted by authorities in Tokyo for embezzlement, the bureau announced on Monday.

BI Fugitive Search Unit chief Bobby Raquepo said Fuminori Sato was arrested on May 23 at the Pasay City police station.

The 37-year-old Sato was at the police station following his arrest based on a complaint filed against him for violating Republic Act 9262 or Anti-violence Against Women and Children.

“He was released after posting bail when he was picked up by BI-FSU operatives who were armed with a mission order from Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente,” Raquepo said.

The Japanese embassy in Manila informed the BI that an arrest warrant was issued by a Japanese court against Sato, prompting Morente to issue a mission order for the arrest of the Japanese national.

The embezzlement case stemmed from a sum of 200,000 Japanese yen (almost PHP100,000) which Sato withdrew from a bank book that a compatriot entrusted to him back in 2012.

Sato is considered an undocumented alien since his passport already expired over two years ago. He arrived in the country as tourist on Dec. 4, 2013.

Raquepo said the Japanese national will be deported for being an overstaying and undocumented alien and will be blacklisted from entering the Philippines again. (PNA)
