GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A huge fire hit a fishing vessel docked in a private wharf here Friday morning, leaving estimated damage of PHP10 million.

Senior Fire Officer 3 Rey Allan Imperio, investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) station here, said major portions of the vessel owned by Frabelle Fishing Corp. was damaged by a fire that started past 6:30 a.m.
and lasted nearly four hours.

Imperio said the blaze reportedly started at the kitchen area and rapidly spread to the other portions of the fishing vessel, which was docked for repairs at the company wharf in Purok Banisil, Barangay Tambler.

“That’s the initial account of workers at the scene but we’re also looking at other possible causes,” he said in an interview.

Imperio said at least a dozen fire trucks responded to the fire, which was declared as
“fire out” at about 10:30 a.m.

Mohatar Saligan, a Frabelle worker in charge of loading and lifting operations at the wharf, said they initially noticed a cloud of thick smoke coming out of the fishing vessel.

Saligan said flames had already engulfed the vessel’s kitchen area when the BFP sub-station in nearby Barangay Calumpang responded to their calls.

The company said no one was hurt among its workers. (PNA)
