MANILA – FIBA, the world governing body of basketball, will push for continued collaboration with the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia as co-hosts of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Richard Carrion, chairman of the Board for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, made this commitment after the board’s first meeting via video conference last week.
“We were all witness to an incredible event last year in China. The next FIBA Basketball World Cup will be brought to another level in 2023, taking place in Asia across three countries, and we are looking forward to the continued collaboration with these host nations,” he said.
During the meeting, the FIBA World Cup board tackled early preparations for the 32-team tournament scheduled from Aug. 25-Sept. 10, 2023.
FIBA president Hamane Niang, secretary general Andreas Zagklis, and central board members Manny Pangilinan, Erick Thohir and Yuko Mitsuya, who are also part of the World Cup board, are also present.
This will be the first time two or more nations are hosting the FIBA World Cup.
The group stages will take place in Jakarta, Okinawa, Pasig, Quezon City, Pasay and Bocaue.
The playoffs of the FIBA World Cup will commence at a still to be determined arena in the Philippines, which acts as the main host of the event.
The continental qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup will begin in November 2021. (PNA)
