MANILA – Carlos Yulo relinquished his FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship floor exercise title on Saturday after placing fifth in Kitakyushu, Japan.

The 21-year-old champion in Stuttgart in 2019 missed out on a podium finish after a crucial error in his landing.

He stepped out of bounds while trying to keep his balance after a routine.

Yulo topped the qualifying phase on Wednesday and was off to a great start in his redemption tour after a failed Tokyo Olympics bid in August.

His performance was good for 14.866 points, but the 0.3-point penalty for the out-of-bound infraction pulled him down to 14.566.

Italian Nicola Bartolini, the 2021 European champion who was first in the order of the participants, finished with 14.8 points for first place.

Kazuki Minami of the host country was second with 14.766, while Finland's Emil Soravuo, who had the lowest qualifying score among the eight finalists, took the bronze with 14.7.

Yulo will try again on Sunday in the parallel bars and vault finals. (PNA)
