LILIW, Laguna Aug. 7 - The town’s police force here has initiated the “Bola Imbes na Droga” (ballgames instead of drugs) program for out of school youths and the drug surrenderers to ward off hard drugs in the communities.

Liliw police station chief of police Senior Inspector Raymund Alfred Osea told Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Monday that they have partnered with the town government through Mayor Ericson Sulibit to engage the millennials and out-of-school youths (OSYs) and surrenderers on alternative sports program to keep them away from the perils of dangerous drugs.

Liliw, known as the “Tsinelas (footwear) Capital of Laguna,” has boosted its anti-illegal drug efforts with the staging of ballgames like basketball and other sporting events through collaborative efforts of the police force, municipal government and the private sector.

Basketballs and others sports gear were distributed to some 33 villages starting Monday following the flag raising ceremony at the Liliw Municipal Covered Court.

Osea said the distribution of a ball each for the drug surrenderers and youth team will be used for their upcoming sports league.

Senior Inspector Gerry Sangalang, Laguna provincial police spokesperson who represented Laguna Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Cecilio Ison, has relayed the message of commendation for the local police and town initiative for the anti-drug program.

Sangalang also thanked the Liliw local government for their relentless support to the PNP to eradicate hard drugs in their communities.

He said their assistance and advocacy towards fighting hard drugs and criminality has reduced the crime index.

Mayor Sulibit and the town legislative council likewise lauded police whose mission and efforts in pursuit of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s policy on the relentless “war on drugs and criminality” helped local officials to curb the drug menace that resulted in declaring Liliw as a “drug-free community”. (Sol Luzano/PNA)
