LAOAG CITY, Aug. 9—A retired policeman was shot dead by a still unidentified man while having a drinking spree with four other companions in San Manuel village, Sarrat town, about 13 kilometers from this city on Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as Senior Superintendent Jeffrey Gorospe, 55 years old, married, resident of San Antonio village, Sarrat town and former Laoag police chief. He sustained gun shot wounds in his lower back and left thigh. He was rushed to the nearby Black Nazarene hospital in San Nicolas town but was pronounced dead on arrival by attending physician, Dr. Marjorie Fariñas.

At about 10:35 pm on Tuesday, witnesses said they were having a drink in a nipa hut  near the residence of Engr. Rodennis Sanchez when they heard successive gun fires. The victim, who was just about 10 meters away from them, shouted that he was hit.

He then requested them to turn off the light and they heard a motorcycle fleeing away.

Police recovered 11 empty shells of M16 Armalite rifle.

Chief Inspector Roldan Suitos, police chief of Sarrat town, said in a radio interview that the former Laoag chief was a well-accomplished police officer.

“We are conducting a deep investigation to establish all possible motives of the crime,” said Suitos as he enjoined all those who have any information to help resolve the killing.

To family, friends and co-workers, Gorospe was known as a devoted family man and outstanding police officer.

During his stint as police chief of Laoag, the Laoag Philippine National Police was adjudged as best performing city police station, most presentable police station and best Barangay Peace Keeping Action Team City Police Station.(PNA)
