Trump calls China’s Xi for talks on North Korea, Xi urges restrain

BEIJING, Aug. 12 -- US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping had a late-night phone conversation on North Korea, Chinese state media reported Saturday.

The two leaders exchanged opinions on the current situation in the Korean peninsula. President Xi stressed Washington and Beijing were both interested in maintaining peace and stability on a nukes-free peninsula, the China Central Television state broadcaster said.

The Chinese leader again urged his US counterpart and the North to refrain from words or actions that would escalate the crisis and reiterated that a peaceful resolution was the only option.

"All relevant parties must now exercise restraint… The Korean nuclear problem needs to be resolved through political reconciliation and dialogue," Xi was quoted as saying. (Sputnik)
