ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The City Health Office has already vaccinated a total of 22,914 school children in the ongoing school-based immunization program of the government.

Corazon Pagotaisidro, city health office immunization program coordinator, on Wednesday said that covered by the program are children enrolled in Grades 1, 4 and 7.

But Pagotaisidro said the immunization for Grade 4 only covered female students aged nine to 13.

Pagotaisidro said Grade 1 pupils were immunized with measles and tetanus diphtheria vaccines; for Grade 4, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccines for the prevention of cervical cancer; and, Grade 7, tetanus diphtheria and measles vaccines.

She said that 5,065 of the total immunized children are enrolled in Grade 1; 2,294 in Grade 4; and, 15,555 in Grade 7.

She said the target goal of the month-long school-based immunization program, which is from August 1 to 31, is to immunize 44,544 students.

To be immunized are as follows: 16,092 in Grade 1; 10,072, Grade 4; and, 18,380 in Grade 7.

Pagotaisidro is optimistic they could meet the target number of children to be immunized since more than half are already vaccinated.

Pagotaisidro said the objective of the program is to protect the younger population from tetanus and diphtheria, measles, rubella, and cervical cancer.

She said these diseases are fatal but can be prevented with complete immunization. (RGAAG/PNA)
