DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has ordered the suspension of classes Thursday in all private schools from K-12 to college level, due to the expected protest actions from various sectors.

"Since it is a national day of protest (September 21) and declared by the Office of the President as such, since it covers only public schools, we will also declare a suspension of clases for private schools," Duterte-Carpio said in a press conference at City Hall Wednesday.

She said the suspension of classes in the city (private schools) will ensure the safety of the students during the day of protest. It will also make sure that the students will not be disturbed by the protest actions.

"Just stay home and prepare for your September 22 classes," the city mayor said.

Duterte-Carpio said the protest actions that will be conducted at the Freedom Park and Rizal Park will not require a permit from City Hall.
A group of protesters has indicated its intention to converge in the said areas and to march along the downtown area.

"It's okay because there are no classes to interrupt," she said.

A Memorandum Circular issued by Malacañang suspended work and classes in all government offices, including local government units and public schools in all levels including stare and LGU universities, colleges/technical and vocational schools.

The circular indicated that other branches of government where the executive branch has no jurisdiction are not covered by the suspension.

"Government employees who will be assigned to report for work on September 21 shall be remunerated through compensatory time-off for hours of work rendered, per Civil Service Commission (CSC) rules and regulations," read the circular.

Suspension of work in the private sector and classes in private schools in the affected areas is left to the sound discretion of their respective heads.
