Olympian Diaz bags silver in Asian weightlifting event

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Olympian Hidilyn Diaz bagged the silver medal in the weightlifting event in the ongoing 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

The participation of Diaz in the AIMAG is her first competition after she won the silver medal in the 53-kilogram (kg) category for women in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Diaz bagged on Tuesday the silver medal in the 53-kg category for women which was participated by 11 countries in the ongoing 10-day AIMAG in Turkmenistan.

The weightlifter from China won the gold medal while the bronze medal was bagged by a weightlifter from the host country.

The 5th AIMAG kicked off on Sunday, September 17, and ends on Wednesday of next week, September 27.

“This is just one of the many preparations in going to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” Diaz told the Philippine News Agency through a social media chat room.

The other weightlifters competing together with Diaz in the 5th AIMAG are the following: Dessa Delos Santos; Kristel Macrohon; and, Elreen Ann Ando.

They are accompanied by weightlifting coach Antonio Agustin Jr.
Overall, the Philippines has already garnered 13 medals in the ongoing 5th AIMAG in Turkmenistan.

These comprised of two gold, five silver and six bronze medals. (PNA)
