DAGUPAN CITY -- Two private groups have signified their intention to put up a common terminal for all passenger utility vehicles (PUV) to include buses, mini-buses, vans and jeepneys plying Dagupan at no expense to the city government.
This was bared Thursday by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, chair of the committee on laws, ordinances and judiciary in the city council.
He identified the proponents as the Silverio's Corporation headed by Dr. Abraham Coquia and the group of Salvador P. Dayo.
The two groups sent separate letters to Mayor Belen Fernandez who endorsed the same to the city council for study.
Both groups responded to a previous resolution of the city council authored by Councilor Luis Samson Jr. directing the City Engineer as well as the City Assessor to scout for available land in Barangay Lucao, Pantal or any feasible area in the city as site of a common terminal.
Silverio's Corporation wants to put up and operate a common terminal at its own lot located at the end of the Jose de Venecia Expressway Extension in Barangay Pantal while Dayao's group would like the terminal to be located along the JdV Expressway in Barangay Tapuac, on a lot yet to be backfilled.
Tamayo said the city council would closely evaluate the two proposals given the fact that Victory Liner, Five Star and Solid North and its sister company Dagupan Bus were given an ultimatum up to the end of the year to vacate their terminals on Perez Boulevard, being a violation of City Ordinance 995-77 which prohibits terminals whose ingress and egress is 100 meters away from a street intersection.
All other terminals of vans and mini-buses violating such ordinance were likewise directed to be closed by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Tamayo revealed that the existing common terminal on M.H. del Pilar Street is expected to cease operations also by the end of the year because it is located on part of the property acquired by Shoe Mart Inc. which is now developing and building the SM Center Dagupan. (PNA)
