ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Office of the City Agriculture has requested the city government to allocate PhP18 million to provide assistance to farmers and fisherfolk affected by the recent storm surge and flashflood that hit many parts of this city.

City Agriculturist Diosdao Palacat on Wednesday said the funds, once allocated, will be used to purchase seeds for rice, corn, vegetable, fertilizer, bangus and prawn fries to be distributed to the affected farmers.

Data from Palacat’s office showed that 2,499 farmers and fisherfolk were affected in the storm surge and flashflood that hit this city last month.

So far, 1,183.4 hectares of crops and 1,700.7 hectares of fishponds and seaweeds worth PhP155.6 million have been destroyed.

But Palacat said the farmers and fishfolk will have to rehabilitate first their farmlands before they will be granted assistance. (PNA)
