Cebu Uni paddlers sink Malaysians in Asia-Pacific games

CEBU CITY -- Tournament favorite University of Cebu (UC) swept its opening matches in the 2nd Asia-Pacific University Games (APUG) table tennis team competition Thursday at Robinson’s Galleria here.

The University of Cebu Webmasters cruised to a 5-0 victory over UniversitiTeknologi Mara (UiTM) of Malaysia to post their first win in the single round-robin tournament.

Leading the UC onslaught was newcomer Glendo Nayre and veteran Diana Oliverio, who both annihilated their respective Malaysian opponents.

Nayre devastated UiTM’sHanapi, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9, in the men’s singles contest, while Oliverio clobbered Naimah, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7.

In the men’s doubles, the veteran and newcomer tandem of Fausto Comaingking and John Vincent Cabaluna rallied in the final set to overcome the threat of Malaysian duo Syazwan and Hakim with an 11-7, 11-8, 3-11, 6-11, 11-7 triumph.

Cebuana paddlers Athena Comaingking and Lez Lie Agbon bounced back from a poor first-set performance to outlast the pair of UiTM’sAyu and Naimah, 7-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-3, in the women’s doubles.

Nayre and Lindy Marie Darlo completed the Webmasters’ sweep of their opening games as they easily defeated Hanapi and Ayu in the mixed doubles, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5.

The Malaysian visitors later avenged their loss to UC by winning both the men’s and women’s singles in their following encounter against Cebu Institute of Technology - University (CIT-U).

Hakim bested Clint Siason of CIT-U, 15-3, 11-4, 11-9, in the men’s competition, while Ayu fashioned out an easy 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 triumph over Marnie Garcia in the distaff side.

The Asia-Pacific University Games opened Wednesday with the basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Seeing action in the six-day sports fest are Cebu schools UC, CIT-U, University of the Visayas, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, University of San Jose - Recoletos, and University of San Carlos and foreign athletes from the UiTM and Jiangxi Provincial Pingxiang Experimental School of China.
