TACLOBAN CITY -- Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban City has resumed its full operations on Sunday morning after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) together with the Philippine Air Force and Army have cleared it of fallen trees and other debris that littered the area in the wake of the onslaught of tropical Storm "Urduja."
The city airport temporarily suspended its operations on Friday noon (Dec. 15), prompting cancellation of all commercial flights.
Strong winds toppled several trees that blocked the access road leading to the airport and caused a portion of the cyclone fence to lean, damaging several building facilities.
The immediate assistance provided by the Air Force and Army soldiers enabled airport personnel to swiftly restore the damaged cyclone perimeter fence and replace the shattered wind cone within hours.
They also reinforced the building’s ceiling and installed portable floodlights at the parking area of the airport.
“We sincerely thank our Philippine Air Force and Army for helping us here. Because of their help, our airport personnel managed to swiftly accomplish the job,” CAAP Director General Jom Sydiongco said in a statement.
Despite sustaining minor damage from the storm, CAAP said all airports in the Eastern Visayas region located in Calbayog, Catarman, Catbalogan, Borongan, Guiuan, Tacloban, Biliran, Ormoc, Maasin and Hilongos are operational. (PNA)
