ILOILO CITY – The city government will continue to implement the streamlining of city hall employees and remove redundant positions, according to Mayor Jose Espinosa III on Monday.

Espinosa said he has given City Administrator lawyer Hernando Galvez the authority to evaluate the performance of city government job hires. He added that when he found merit in the recommendations of Galvez, then he never “overrule”.

The mayor said that the city government will continue to check on the performance of its employees, even as he emphasized that there is no politics involved in the non-renewal of the contract of several job hires.

“You don’t have to worry if you perform but if you do not perform then you have to worry,” he said.

The city government renews monthly the contract of job hires. One of the affected was the Iloilo City Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) where majority of its job hires were no longer renewed.

Espinosa said that any questions regarding non-renewal will be directed to the city administrator. He challenged them to convince the administrator that they are doing well in their performance of duty.

“Let us be fair,” he said, adding that he does not want to be blamed of being remiss in performing his duties.

That review is ongoing, he added.

To recall, Espinosa also created a committee that reviewed the performance of the Executive Assistants (EAs) who were appointed during the time of his predecessors.

Espinosa said that his administration was able to deliver even if he did not renew all the EAs.

The former Iloilo City vice mayor replaced Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, who was dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman last year for serious dishonesty related to his alleged unexplained wealth. Espinosa was sworn in as mayor  since  October 2017 to serve the remainder of Mabilog's term until 2019. (PNA)
