MANILA -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to improve the packaging of their products to be more competitive both in the domestic and international markets.

Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez led the launching of a department-initiated packaging roadshow tagged Pack! Pinas Monday, in hopes of bringing MSMEs up-to-date on the latest trends and opportunities in product enhancements and packaging solutions.

Lopez said the DTI is partnering with the private sector for them to share their expertise in packaging.

“Along the value chain as we are analyzing also the support that’s being needed is this area of packaging, this forms part of the product development side of support,” he said.

“In product development support, we all recognize the importance of packaging. Packaging is your advertisement, the only thing that will speak for the product at the point of sale,” the DTI chief added.

He lamented that products of MSMEs from other Asian countries are more marketable than products from the Philippines as they invest on the design and technology for their packaging.

Lopez said packaging only accounts for 5 percent of the total production cost, in which the increase of price due to better packaging can be passed on to consumers.

Despite the increase in the prices of the products, which the trade chief considered minimal, these products will be more attractive and marketable, he added. He said those who invest on better packaging have also improved their sales threefold or beyond, as in the case of some MSMEs.

“We always encourage our MSMEs to innovate. And through this kind of event, we link them to industry experts in packaging and help them get their products to be more attractive to consumers, not just locally but also abroad,” said Lopez.

Meanwhile, the Pack! Pinas roadshow will be held on May 3 to 4 at Summit Hotel in Tacloban for the Visayas leg; May 16 to 17 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro for the Mindanao leg; and on May 29 to 30 at San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite for the Luzon leg. (PNA)
