TEHRAN -- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a prompt investigation of crimes in Yemen.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the airstrikes on a wedding party in Hajjah and on civilian vehicles in Taizz, where at least 50 civilians, including children, were reportedly killed and scores of others injured,” Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed,” the statement reads. “The Secretary-General reminds all parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law concerning the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts. He calls for a prompt, effective and transparent investigation.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi also earlier slammed the Saudi Arabia air strike on Hajjah, saying strikes on houses and non-military targets and also preventing international bodies to have access for rescue operations are violations of humanitarian rules and principles.
Saudi Arabia and its regional allies attacked Yemen in March 2015 to bring back to power the deposed president of Yemen Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
Thousands of Yemenis have been killed in the attacks by the Saudi-US coalition and more than 2,000 have died due to a cholera epidemic.
Saudis, in their latest war crime in Yemen, bombarded a wedding party in Hajjah and killed dozens of innocent civilians including children. (IRNA)
