IMUS CITY, Cavite --Twenty-three students from various educational institutions in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon provinces have qualified for the four-year Fisheries Scholarship Program (FSP) for their collegiate course under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

BFAR’s FSP, which started in 1980, extends undergraduate scholarships to deserving students who are interested to pursue a four-year Bachelor of Science Fisheries course after hurdling through a qualifying examination.

The FSP has two components such as the Fisheries Industry Leaders Grant (FILG) and Fisheries Children’s Education Grant (FCEG).

Three slots are available for the FILG while 20 slots are for FCEG, except for Region 8 and ARMM where FCEG slots are at 30 each.

As a merit-based scholarship, FILG is intended to produce professional manpower to serve the requirements of both government and private sector in the fisheries industry.

On the other hand, FCEG is given to poor but deserving high school graduates whose parents are registered municipal fisherfolk and are assisted whether legitimate, acknowledged illegitimate or legally-adopted children of the fisher folk parents, in their pursuit of college education for their socio-economic improvement.

The list furnished to the PNA on Thursday, signed by BFAR Director and Concurrent Undersecretary for Fisheries of the Department of Agriculture Commodore Eduardo B. Gongona, disclosed that the full three slots for FILG were obtained by Naic National High School students.

The three FILG student-recipients are Ronnie M. Zapanta, Ericka C. Coralde and Joyleen M. Gratija.
