MANILA – Malacañang on Friday released a new batch of presidential appointees including Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson Sheriff Manimbayan Abas and 39 Department of Education (DepEd) assistant school division superintendents.

President Rodrigo Duterte reappointed Abas as Comelec chairman in January this year but his appointment paper was signed by the President only on May 23.

Abas got his confirmation from the Commission on Appointment (CA) also on the same day Duterte signed his appointment.

Abas will serve as Comelec chief until Feb. 2, 2022.

A nephew of Moro Islamic Liberation Front chief (MILF) negotiator Mohagher Iqbal, Abas was an assistant regional director of the Civil Service Commission in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao before former president Benigno Aquino III appointed him as poll commissioner in 2015.
