Trump congratulates Thai Navy Seals on rescue of teenagers from cave

WASHINGTON -- US President Donald Trump congratulated on Tuesday the Thai Navy Seals on the successful rescue of 12 teenage boys and their coach from a flooded cave, where they were trapped for 18 days.

"On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the treacherous cave in Thailand. Such a beautiful moment - all freed, great job!" Trump said in a Twitter message.

Vice President Mike Pence praised in a Tuesday statement the efforts of the Thai rescuers and the more than three dozen Americans involved.

"Wonderful news this morning as all the boys and their coach have been successfully rescued from the Thai cave. Proud of the brave Thai rescuers & the efforts of over three dozen US military & civilians involved," Pence said on Twitter.

Thailand's Health Ministry permanent secretary said earlier on Tuesday that everyone was in good health, but media reports indicate the boys will remain in hospital for a week because some blood tests have shown signs of infection.

On June 23, several hours after the 12 members of a local football team and their coach entered the Tham Luang cave, heavy rain started, preventing them from leaving. Rescue teams searched for the boys and their coach for 10 days before finding them alive. On Sunday, the head of the rescue team announced the start of the operation to get the teenagers and their coach out of the cave. (Sputnik)
