ILOILO CITY -- The provincial government is now accepting entries from Ilonggo artists who want to join the first ever mural competition in Iloilo.

A grand prize of PHP400,000 will be given to the champion, Provincial Board Member Demy Sonza, co-chairman of the committee for the mural design competition, said in an interview Tuesday.

Themed “Ilonggo Culture and Heritage”, the mural design competition aims to boost tourism through the field of arts as it will serve as the centerpiece of the Capitol grounds, which is currently undergoing improvements.

It is open to all Ilonggo artists of any age, either individual or a  group, Sonza said.

He added, however, that all elected officials and heads of offices, including their relatives up to the fourth civil degree of consanguinity, are prohibited from participating in the competition.

“The rich heritage and culture of Iloilo should be depicted on the mural design. We will accept entries until Sept. 28,” Sonza said.

Interested participants must submit a colored presentation of their mural design using a full size illustration board to the Office of Culture, Arts, History and Tourism at the Capitol.

All submitted designs will undergo preliminary screening by a distinguished panel of judges.

Judging will be based on concept, originality, creativity and visual execution.

Five entries will be shortlisted and one will be declared as champion. The four other finalists will receive consolation prizes worth PHP25,000 each.

The champion will execute the winning design on a 2-meter by 15-meter wall at the Capitol grounds. (PNA)
