MANILA -- About 200 student writers will join the "Kampong Balagtas" literary camp on April 2-4 at the Orion Elementary School in Orion, Bataan.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) said the participants are Grade 7 to Grade 11 students from select regions.

"Kampong Balagtas" will coincide with the official opening of the National Literature Month (NLM) in Bataan on April 2 to commemorate the birthday of Francisco "Balagtas" Baltazar, a Filipino poet.

The participants will compete in essay writing, poem, and short stories.

National Artist Virgilio Almario and Filipino singer and songwriter Joey Ayala are expected to grace the event.

Meanwhile, the NCCA is inviting the public to join other activities and contests in line with the NLM.

This year's theme for the NLM is "Buklugan Panitikan" to celebrate the spirit unity, healing and thanksgiving. "Buklugan" was derived from a Subanen -- a tribe indigenous to the Zamboanga Peninsula -- ritual "buklog". (PNA)
