DAVAO CITY -- Two communist New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas were killed during a 45-minute firefight with the Philippine Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion in a remote village in Digos City on Thursday.

Capt. Jerry Lamosao, spokesperson of the Army's 10th Infantry Division, said the bodies of the fatalities have yet to be identified.

The soldiers also recovered one high-powered firearm at the encounter site. No casualty was recorded on the government side, Lamosao said.

Lamosao said the firefight ensued after personnel of Bravo Company and Scout Platoon of 39th IB were sent to the area upon receiving information that armed men were seen at the vicinity of Sitio Lanan, Barangay Goma.

He said the troops encountered an undetermined number of insurgents believed under Guerilla Front 51, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).

Lamosao said the residents in the area suspected the armed men were planning to conduct extortion and recruitment activities.

"As always, the determination of the troops and the support of the populace will definitely bear the fruit of success as it prevents NPA's atrocious plan," said Brigadier General Mario G Lacurom, Officer-in-Charge of the 10th ID. (PNA)
