MANILA -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has intensified its monitoring of transmission facilities following the earthquake that shook a wide area of Luzon, causing power outages in some provinces.

In an advisory, the grid operator said it has activated a 24/7 monitoring to check “the status of transmission facilities in Luzon, following the earthquake which occurred today, April 22.”

It said power outages were registered in Pangasinan, Pampanga, La Union, and Bataan.

“The provinces of Quezon, Batangas, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon were also affected but have been restored,” it said.

“As of 6 PM, NGCP is still assessing the extent of the damage. Aerial and foot patrol will commence as soon as the situation is safe,” it said and vowed to issue updates “as soon as available.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), in a text blast to mobile phone users in the country, said a 5.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded at Castillejos, Zambales at around 5:11 pm Monday.

“Damages at aftershocks ay inaasahan. Maging handa at siguraduhing ligtas ang sarili at pamilya (Damages and aftershocks are expected. Be ready and ensure your safety as well as your family),” it added. (PNA)
