DIPOLOG CITY, Zamboanga del Norte -- A cable TV company here is being sued for the alleged illegal airing of the highly anticipated movie, “Avengers: Endgame”, with some millennials angrily taking to Facebook to denounce the company dishing out the ultimate “spoiler.”
A day after the “premier” showing of the movie on Wednesday, Orient Cable and Telecommunications, Inc. aired “Avengers: Endgame”, prompting the operators of Teatro de Dapitan -- an authorized movie house for the Avengers movie -- to complain to the local police.
After Teatro de Dapitan's lawyers went to the police to record the incident Thursday, Orient Cable stopped airing the movie and replaced it with another old but pirated version of “Captain Barbel”.
“We are filing a case against Orient Cable, definitely,” said lawyer Chembeelyn Alpeche-Balucan, who represented Teatro de Dapitan.
Local millennial moviegoers took to Facebook to register their ire on Orient Cable.
“Spoiler alert: Orient Cable where TF did you get the link?” a millennial calling himself “Vince Youngblood” posted on Facebook.
A student of Multimedia Studies at the University of the Philippines Open University also noted, “This act is a huge violation of the law and a huge disrespect of the film Industry.”
The student said Orient Cable has apparently violated three laws, Republic Act 8293 (RA) or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, RA 10088 or the Anti-Camcording Act of 2010, and RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
“Orient Cable, hunnie, you are part of the TV and Film industry. Clearly, you know how that business works. This stunt you’re pulling off supports piracy. Do you need an education about that? If you’re earning from your watch time, you’re stealing other people’s years of work and selling it for clout in such a bad light,” the student said in her post.
The management of Orient Cable has remained silent on the issue and declined to issue a statement when visited by reporters Friday. (PNA)
