ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A follower of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed while a soldier was wounded in a clash as focused military operations continue against the ASG in the province of Sulu, an official said Monday.

Lt. Gen. Arnel Dela Vega, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, said the encounter occurred around 9:55 a.m. Sunday in Sitio Kan Udang, Barangay Kan ague, Patikul, Sulu.

Dela Vega said the troops from the Army’s 32nd Infantry Battalion were conducting focused military operations when they chanced upon a group of 10 ASG bandits that triggered a 20-minute firefight.

Dela Vega said the firefight resulted in the death of an ASG bandit and the wounding of a soldier, adding the ASG bandits fled towards the southeast direction of the clash site.

“The Western Mindanao Command continuously conduct intensified military operations to deter the different threat groups from creating havoc,” he said. (PNA)
