DAVAO CITY -- A total of 804 inmates in Davao Region cast their votes for senatorial candidates on Monday, an official of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said.

BJMP-Region 11 has 1,090 inmates who are registered voters but only 804 were able to vote due to double entry, name discrepancy, and some opted to waive their right.

“The Comelec appointed special election board for the precincts that were established inside the jail facility,” said Jail Chief Superintendent Amelia Rayandayan, BJMP-11 director.

Rayandayan said the BJMP personnel have been on red alert status since Saturday.

"We coordinated with the PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines to facilitate fast, secure and safe election inside our jail facilities,” she said.

According to Rayandayan, the Special Tactics and Response Team (STAR), an elite tactical unit of BJMP Davao had been deployed in all the jails in the Davao Region to secure election activities.

She further said that an inspection team was also deployed in all jail units in the Davao Region to oversee and supervise the actual voting in the facilities.

The participation of the detainees in the election this year is the fourth time for BJMP. The first was in 2010, 2013, and 2016 elections. (PNA)
